Meet Your Oriental Medicine Practitioner:

Joyce Kenmotsu Sonoda, LA.c

An Expert in Healing, Growth and Resilience

At the core of Joyce Kenmotsu Sonoda’s approach to health and wellness is the belief that real healing goes beyond the physical. It’s about creating lasting balance and vitality for both your mind and body. Joyce’s personal journey into holistic health began at a young age, when she struggled with frequent illness and the side effects of antibiotics that weakened her immune system. Determined to feel better, Joyce started researching natural remedies and discovered the power of herbal medicine to fight off illness and thrive. Her passion for health grew as she navigated her experiences as a youth athlete, where she faced serious sports injuries during her international sports career while representing the USA. The extensive injuries made it difficult to walk, and she didn’t want to deal with the aftermath of the side effects that she experienced from pharmaceuticals in the past. Alongside of the stress of letting down her team and live a normal life, she began battling food allergies, IBS, and painful skin conditions such as cystic acne vulgaris. These challenges inspired her to explore natural medicine. She found accredited programs to study both sports medicine and natural medicine. So intrigued she was about learning how the mind and body are interconnected in the healing process, she simultaneously accomplished a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology and a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, both while working as an Acupuncture assistant. Knowing that California is one of the most formidable states to receive a license from in the country, she went all in and became California State Board certified at the age of 24, making her the youngest in her graduating program to do so. She then went on to study Biocomputational sciences abroad in Rome, Italy where she did laboratory research of Chrondrogenic Stem Cells in the application of treating Cancer. Through her journey, Joyce realized that true health isn’t just about treating illness; it’s about teaching people how to prevent health problems and take action to heal before surgical intervention becomes the only way. This philosophy became even more important after Joyce suffered a major car accident that left her with a L4-L5 spinal disc injury, limiting her activities of daily living and causing depression and weight gain. Despite being advised that surgery was the only way to recover, Joyce chose a different path for her healing journey. She applied her expertise in acupuncture, oriental medicine nutrition, and exercise to heal and regain strength. She even went on to complete a triathlon and earn a silver medal in an ultimate fitness championship. Today, Joyce shares a personal mission to help others also take charge of their health in a natural and sustainable way.
